How Great Thou Art

How great thou art-2

By Laura Cisson

The other night I lay awake thinking. Seems most days the only time I can think is after everyone else is asleep and the house is quiet. Of course this doesn’t help me actually fall asleep- only to think and worry and process and figure out.

I was thinking of my to-do list, school starting, my kids getting older, my marriage, my business, images and stories that have flashed across Facebook the last several weeks, finances, why my kids don’t obey, the injustices of the world. What am I doing wrong? What am I doing right? What else can I do?

Then I thought back to what my family and I had done earlier that day: what a peaceful, relaxing, fun time we had.

A few weeks ago we realized that somehow a trip to the coast had slipped us by amidst the busyness of summer. Now summer was almost over. So we planned a last hoorah before school started. We decided to go somewhere new this time. We were not disappointed.

Forever-2

The water and sky were as blue and brilliant as I have ever seen at the Oregon coast. The rocks that rose up out of the water were spectacular. I watched a seagull standing near the water, waiting for the waves to lift him up so he could plunge his beak down into the water to scoop up food. I thought of how God has created each creature with a purpose and made them all uniquely suited for their environment. As I looked out into the ocean, I remembered that God has measured all the waters in the palm of His hand, how He promised to Abraham that his descendants would be as many as the sand on the seashore. I marveled at how much sand there actually was, right there, where I was sitting.

So as I lay in bed thinking, figuring out, worrying, I thought of the truths God had whispered to my heart only hours before, of His majesty, His glory. A song filled my mind,

“Oh Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made.
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed:

Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee:
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee:
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!”

And, yes, I sang the entire old hymn. By the time I had finished, tears were sliding down my face and dropping onto my pillow. God is so much bigger and more amazing than we can even imagine! There are not even words to describe the greatness of our Creator and Savior. And yet, there I lay, with the cares of my life and the world on my shoulders. Isn’t He big enough to handle it all? The God who can hold the waters of the earth in the palm of His hand is big enough for all my concerns and all of yours.

Forever

On our way home from the beach, we drove into a rain storm. A beautiful double rainbow filled the sky in front of us and we followed it for miles. It was another reminder from the One who loves us so much. God doesn’t break His promises, even in the rain. He’s faithful. He’s big enough. He created each of us with a purpose and has made us uniquely suited for our environment. How easily we forgot and how gently He reminds us.
